Carved Meershaum amber stem, or in this case a cigar holder, made in the shape of Bernhard Holtermann's head (1838-1885). Includes a fitted stem case with purple liner. Holtermann was a German, who cane to Australia for the gold rush in 1858. After years of prospecting, he discovered a mass of gold weighing 630 lbs on his claim at Hawkins Hill in NSW Austrailia in 1872. At the time this was the largest specimen of mined gold in the world. There are newspaper clipping about Holtermann and a letter from the stem holder's daughter from 2001 about the stem. An unusual and rare item to round out your mining collection.
