Austin, TX- Republic of Texas 50¢ Apr. 1, 1843 Cr. A12 Medlar 32 Olson 786
This is a note on every Texas collector's wish list. Exchequer notes were the last paper money of the Republic and were issued from 1842-45. They were closely controlled and diligently destroyed when redeemed due to their being backed by gold. These important notes were also actually signed by Sam Houston. Only 3,800 of this denomination were issued and we can track only three today, with this being easily the second highest graded example. In fact, the total census of all denominations for the Exchequer notes is probably in the range of only 20 to 25 notes. This particular note was repaired long ago giving it an appearance of at least Fine with a few internal splits. A rare note regardless of grade, and one which will no doubt draw the attention of every collector of Republic of Texas material.
From The William A.
