Fantastic hand drawn map with color of part of the main Rese River mining district at Austin. Dated September, 1865 by W. Schofield, mining and civil engineer. 21.5 x 30".
Prominent features include Central Hill at left, Union Hill at center. North is approximately to the left. off the west end of Central Hill is the Oregon Co. mill, sold to the Manhattan MC in late 1865. Off the west end of Union Hill is the Boston Company's mill and adjacent ore house.
Browne's report (Mineral resources West of the Rocky Mountains) 1868 discusses the district to some extent. Raymond's follow-up in 1869 does not mention Central or Union Hill, which might appear to be at the upper north part of Raymond's map opposite p78 where the Oregon is mentioned. Abbe's book on Austin has much discussion of the Oregon Company, pp17-25.
This may be one of the very few original Reese River hand drawn mining maps left in private hands.
