This is indeed an unusual piece. Jefferson Salsig is writing his wife on October 23, 1864 in Three Rivers, Michigan. Now it might be confusing in that there is an Atchison, Kas. post office cancel. Jefferson solves this problem for us. He is writing a quick note and he didn't have time to get it into the official mails. He instead puts it on a stage coach, gives the driver some money (I assume) and sends the letter on its way. It enters the postal system in Atchison on November 19. The letter is short but he does way, "...we are well posted here about Indian troubles as they ae there for this is right on the overland route." Nevada became a state when this letter was in the mails. Cover not used by Wells Fargo.
