Lot of about 40. All issued between 1866 and 1903 drawn on a variety of Austin, Nevada banks. The following impressions and stamps are included on 13 of the checks. Hand tied R229 R22 adhesive perf stamp (issued 1921), hand tied R164 R15 adhesive perf stamp (issued 1901), RN-G1 (issued and cancelled 1878, 1879, 1882, 1884, and 1887), RN-F1 (two issued in 1876), RN-D7 (four issued 1872, 1873, and 1874). Legislative approval of Lander County preceeded Nevada statehood by two years (Dec. 19, 1862). In 1863, residents of Austin voted to make it the county seat. It was known to give up strips of land throughout its early days which earned it the name of "The Mother of Counties." Prominent Austin mines included Austin Manhattan Consolidated Mining Company, Mkanhattan Silver Mining Co. (two checks included in this lot), the Panamint anhd the Paxton. The Panamint recorded nearly $7,000,000 [Ref: Davis, History of Nevada, 1913, pp. 922-923].
