December 28th, 1861 deed between Wm. B. Forster of Marysville and James W. Nye of Carson City (governor) for 25 feet in the first Extension North on the Old Winnemucca Quartz Lode situated on Silver Hill. While this deed is not signed by Nye, one of the witnesses who signs is RM Howland. "Bob" Howland was a friend of Mark Twain and mentioned in a memorable tarantula story in Roughing It. Twain spent time with him in Aurora and Carson City. Printed on a blue form by Sanders & Sloper. Notary Public and Conveyances, Aurora. 14 x 8.5" Nye purchased mining land in the Esmeralda District with James Stark. The Winnemucca Lode was the first silver discovered in Aurora in August 1860. This is a description of the discovery itself, from a pamphlet printed in 1878, long after Aurora's heyday:
"We camped near the race track ( a grassy flat at the head of Willow Gulch), Aug. 21, 1860, late in the evening having left Cory's Peak that morning. Next morning (Aug.22) we moved camp to near where the brewery now stands ( a secluded spot at the head of Esmeralda Gulch); finding good grass and water, we stopped for the purpose of resting a day or two. After turning our animals loose, I went over the hill across the main Esmeralda lode, and found the first silver ore discovered, on the Winnemucca lode, at a point where we subsequently set the center stake of our claim on that lode...."
