Aurora,NV - Esmeralda County - c1895 - Vista of the Waning Mining Town Photograph :
Overlooking the town. Photograph measures 4”x3”, gold single matte 7”x 4 ½”, medium to high contrast—tends toward the grays, and focus is sharp. Photographer not identified. Matte has several dates from the early 1860s. This photo is much later than the matte suggests. Located twenty-three miles southwest of Hawthorne, gold was first discovered in the Aurora area in 1860. The mining district boomed and soon after the town was established. This photograph was snapped after the town’s glory days and before it was rejuvenated in 1906. It's early days were the most productive and exciting. In the spring of 1862, Sam Clemens worked here. In the photo, the town appears to be partially abandoned. The Del Monte Hoist Works can be seen on the hill behind the town. The post office was discontinued in 1887 and returned in 1907.
