Augustus Saint-Gaudens Typed Letter Signed "A St Gaudens". One page, New York City, October 27, 1894, to Mr. R.U. Johnson, New York City. It reads in full: "Dear Sir:- I am sorry to say that I have seen so little of the fellows that I do not know how they stand; but I and my family are going to do our duty, although I think it is hopeless; I do not think that Tammany can ever be downed, there are more dishonest people than honest. Yours sincerely,". St. Gaudens was perhaps the most famous American public sculptor of the late 19th century. Among his more memorable projects are the Robert Gould Shaw monument in Boston, the William T. Sherman monument in New York City and, of course, the bold design found on $20 gold coins minted between 1907 and 1933. Even light toning, minor loss to two corners. Fine condition.
