Augustus, 27 B.C.-A.D.
Augustus, 27 B.C.-A.D.<p> 14. AR denarius minted at Lugdunum, 15-13 B.C. Bare head right of Augustus/Bull butting right. RIC 167a, BMC 451. VF35 ICG, several minor scrapes. The Roman Imperial Coinage, or RIC, was begun in 1923, with volume ten finally appearing in 1994. Written by several numismatic scholars, it is the most complete and often used reference on Roman numismatics. There is a frequency guide in each volume. If a coin is deemed common by RIC, like this Augustus denarius, a "c" for "common" is understood and does not appear in the Seventko catalogue after the RIC number. If a coin is scarce or rare (usually up to R5, R5 being unique), it will appear after the RIC number. Remember that if a mintplace is not mentioned in the listing, the coin was struck at Rome. From the Collection of Dr. Joseph M. Seventko.
