Vintage 6 x 8.5 photo of a sculpture of a seated nude woman, affixed to a 10 x 13 mount, signed and inscribed in black ink in French, “La statue de Monsieur Dutheil est d’un bon modele jeune qui a deja realise ses promesses a Rodin” (loosely translated: “The statue of Mr. Dutheil is a good young model who has already realized its promise Rodin”). In very good condition, with silvering to dark portions of photo, scattered light spotting, and light soiling, foxing, and creasing to mount (which has slightly rough edges and two rounded corners).

Dutheil is known to have been one of Rodin’s friends, but it appears that the work itself enticed the legendary sculptor to offer his praise. Interestingly, Rodin himself later turned his own creative attention toward the female form, producing numerous erotic drawings. This inscription is indeed high praise from the creator of modern sculpture.
