ALS in French, signed “A. Rodin,” one page, 4.5 x 7, no date. Letter to newspaper publisher Charles Chincholle, the founder of the newspaper L'estampe. In full (translated): "Speaking of the bust of Victor Hugo, Le Figaro speaks of a bust by the sculptor Robin. Do you believe it should be rectified and corrected to Rodin? I am your devoted friend and a subscriber of L’estampe." In fine condition, with light overall soiling. In 1883, the journalist Edmond Bazire advised Rodin to make a portrait of a famous man to help establish his own reputation. He introduced the sculptor to Victor Hugo, who refused to pose at sittings, but invited Rodin into his home on the Avenue d’Eylau and allowed him to make a few drawings. Rodin unveiled his model for a bust of Hugo at the Salon of the Societe des Artistes Francais in 1884, and in 1889 was commissioned for the Palais Royal monument to Victor Hugo. A fascinating and amusing letter from the then little-known sculptor.
