Inventor of photographic equipment (1862–1954) who, with his brother Louis, patented the cinematograph and produced the first-ever motion picture in 1894. ALS in French, signed “Augte. Lumiere,” one page both sides, 5 x 8, personal letterhead, September 30, 1890. In full (translated): "I have the pleasure to send you today a postal parcel containing some photography obtained by a process that we have imagined, my brother and I.—You will notice that these proofs show microbes with colorations that they present in preparations. Sir our description on our process is enclosed in this parcel.—If this note seems to be of enough interest you could publish it or use it as you will see fit. We know that you are interested in scientific applications about photography, it is for this motive that we submit this work to you except that it is a little special.” Paper loss to one upper corner and toned tape remnants top edge, otherwise fine condition. The Lumiere brothers experimented with countless photographic processes and began seriously working on techniques for color photography in the 1890s. Excellent content from a period of tremendous innovation in the field.
