August Belmont, Outer Cigar Label
August Belmont, Famous Diplomat and Sportsman, Cigar Label. A lithographed outer label of 4" x 4.75" showing Mr. Belmont's portrait surrounded by an elaborately gold embossed decorative border on a light blue background. August Belmont Sr. was born in Prussia and emigrated to New York City after becoming the American representative of the Rothschild family's bank in Frankfurt. He became a citizen and married the daughter of the legendary naval hero Commodore Matthew Perry. After working in the diplomatic corps, he became very active in Democratic Party politics becoming chairman of the party in 1860. An avid sportsman, he financed the building of Jerome Park in the Bronx where the now-famous annual Triple Crown race the Belmont Stakes was first run. This handsome example of cigar label art likely dates from the 1890s period and should appeal strongly to turf fans as well as label collectors.
