August Belmont Cigar Label w/ Horse Racing Scene
August Belmont Cigar Label with Horse Racing Scene. This lithographed 7" x 6" inner label from the M. Stachelberg & Co. uses the same portrait and gold-embossed border as the outer label offered above. There are two additional scenes however that make this quite appealing. On the left is a horse-racing scene, possibly the Belmont Stakes that was named after Mr. Belmont who financed the construction of Jerome Park where it was first run. Note that the horses are running clockwise in the English fashion as they did at the stakes until 1921. On the right of the portrait is a scene of a luxurious patio featuring a statue of Mercury overlooking a harbor with a sailing ship. Belmont was known as the king of horse racing in America from after the Civil War until his death in 1890. This label is in fine condition with some light handling and surface soiling; it likely dates from the 1890s.

Shipping: Small Flat (view shipping information)
