August 1, 1834. C. Bechtler $5 Gold. Kagin-19. Rarity-5. With 140 G., 20 Distant. Plain Edge. EF-40 PCGS.
The attractive medium gold surfaces of this modestly circulated private half eagle reveal little to the naked eye other than an old diagonal scratch in the field at the C in CAROLINA. Any other marks are minimal but as should be as expected for this localized commercial workhorse denomination. At arm’s length you’ll be hard-pressed to locate an EF example of Kagin-19 with the character and aesthetic appeal of the present piece.
