[Augsburg Confession] - Confessio odder Bekantnus des Glaubens etlicher Fürsten und Stedte (...) [and Philipp Melanchthon] - Apologia der Confession [trsl. from the Latin Justus Jonas]. Wittenberg, Georg Rhau, 1531, 2 parts in 1 vol., 4to, old limp vellum, endpapers renewed, yellow edges, [250] ff. (lacking blank Mm4, browning as usual, marginal foxing). Good copy. Cfr. ill. € 1000/1500 First edition of the first German translation of the Lutheran confession of faith, published simultaneously with the Latin text. Mainly the work of Philipp Melanchthon (1497-1560), it was presented at Augsburg to the Emperor, Charles V, on 35 June 1530. It was countered by Catholic theologians on 3 Aug. Melanchthon answered this with an "Apology for the Confession", which the Emperor refused to receive. This "Apology" was translated by Justus Jonas (1493-1555), defender of Luther. Title of Pt. 2 within elaborate woodcut border. Historiated woodcut initials. Some old marginal manuscripts notes. Ref. Neuser, Confessio Augustana 12c. VD-16 C-4736 (Latin parts only).
