John James Audubon's ''Green Heron'' #333 from the 1971 Havell edition of ''Birds of America,'' the book that made Audubon the preeminent wildlife artist in our country, setting a standard that continues to this day. The brilliant color image depicts two herons about to eat a multi-colored butterfly. Measures 39.25'' x 26.5.'' Originally published on hand-made rag paper, then on 100% unbleached cotton rags for the Amsterdam edition, with each sheet bearing a watermark unique to the edition. Image contains slight horizontal wrinkling and slight chips to the edges, otherwise excellent condition.
