Approximate sheet size: 40 x 28 inches. Approximate frame size: 48 x 37 inches. A fine image of two great-footed hawks from scarcest edition of the greatest illustrated natural history work to be produced in America during the nineteenth century.<BR><BR>This print is being offered as a high-quality decorative print and has not been examined out of the frame. (It is matted, framed and glazed.)<BR>The Bien Edition is the one of the earliest and best examples of American chromolithography and can be counted among the finest books ever published using this technology. It was sold by subscription, beginning in 1858, but the project was halted due to the Civil War. Only about 150 of the Audubon plates were completed. (The original double-elephant folio edition boasted 435 plates.) Julius Bien of New York was a German immigrant and an early pioneer in America of chromolithography.
