John James Audubon (1785-1851), "Barn Owl," (pl. 34). New York, 1860. Chromolithograph by Julius Bien. Sheet size 39.125" x 26.375." Framed. Seven years after Audubon's death, his son John Woodhouse Audubon, together with Julius Bien, a New York printer who pioneered the field of chromolithography, began an American edition of "Birds of America." Through a process of as many as thirty printing stages, with additional hand engraving and coloring, Bien reproduced the subtleties of the original engravings. Production was brought to a halt by the advent of the Civil War. Only 150 plates were ever completed._
