***Auction Highlight*** NGC 1854-o W-2 Three Dollar Gold .$3 Graded au55 By NGC. Up for auction is a seriously undegraded 1854-O Three-Dollar Gold Piece. Winter-2. AU-55 by NGC. Blended olive and orange-gold patina greets the viewer from both sides of this overall boldly defined example. Alone among New Orleans Mint issues in the three-dollar gold series, the 1854-O was produced to the extent of 24,000 pieces. This is a generous total for the type, but attrition through circulation was high and of the 1,000 or so coins believed extant most grade EF or lower. This is a noteworthy AU whose significance is further enhanced by the extreme rarity of true Mint State survivors. Only a single die variety is known for this issue, but survivors come in two die states. Late die state examples, as here, are characterized by extensive lapping of the reverse die that has attenuated, among other features, the right ribbon end and both ribbon loops. I have included two examples of au58 NGC examples. I feel our example is equal to either of these and an au55 grade was not warranted. In au55 this coin trends $6,000 and in au58 $19,500 and ms60 $55,000. I would resend this coin in for regrading. PCGS has only ever graded 2 examples as Mint State, and NGC has only ever graded 25 as Mint State. Many of these are resubmits, I would estimate that no more than 10 Mint State examples exist. I think an au58 grade is the correct grade. Please look at the examples provided. I would estimate the value of this coin at $12-$13k prior to getting it into an au58 holder and $18k-$19k after. A Corey's Pick, Bid to Win, Don't let it get Away, you might not find its equal Coin. I give this coin my highest recommendation
