***Auction Highlight*** Highlight of the Year 1813 50c/UNI TOP POP! Capped Bust Half Dollar 50c Graded ms65 By SEGS. Highlight of the Year - Up for Auction is the Legendary 1813 50c/UNI Capped Bust Half Dollar. TOP POP, tied for Finest Known, None graded Finer! One of the most unusual engraving errors on 1813 Half Dollars is the 50C over UNI variety. The normal procedure for engraving a die in 1813 began with a hubbing of the eagle and the scroll into a steel die. Following that, the engraver began placing the legend around the central design and the denomination beneath the eagle. Clearly, the engraver of this die was a little confused when he began adding the legend to the back of the coin. Instead of beginning the word UNITED in the normal position above the tip of the eagle's right wing (viewer's left), the engraver began punching letters adjacent to the lowest arrow. He added three letters (UNI) before realizing his mistake. Rather than discard an expensive steel die, the engraver completed the die as normal, placing the denomination over the misplaced UNI. This was not unprecedented, as there are numerous overdates from this era, as well as inappropriate star counts, and misplaced letters.Relative to the overall population of 1813 Half Dollars, the 50C/UNI is about ten times as rare as the "normal" varieties. About 25 Mint State examples are known, the best of which are 2 ms65 examples, the coin you are looking at, and one other WOW!. I have included a picture of the other ms65, I think ours has much greater eye appeal and stronger Luster! The other ms65 last sold for $44,063 in the Stacks 2015 sale. In 2014 an ms64 realized $24,675 in a Heritage auction. In 2016, the last ms63 realized $10,281 in the Goldberg Sale. ms65 trends $47,500 on this Ultra rare and highly sought variety! The coin at hand is An incredibly lustrous and original specimen that ranks as tied for finest known survivor from these dies. Pearlescent silver-grey patina at the centers is accented by olive-gold and navy-blue iridescence at the borders. Ideally centered and very sharply struck, with subtle traces of clashing to be seen under close inspection. No examples have been graded finer by any service. I wish you good luck! A Corey's Pick, Bid to Win, Don't let it get Away, you might not find its equal Coin. I give this coin my highest recommendation
