***Auction Highlight*** 1920-s Gold St. Gaudens Double Eagle $20 Graded ms63+ BY SEGS. The 1920-S is a classic rarity in the Saint-Gaudens double eagle series, boasting a history replete with political and economic turmoil. In 1916, production of twenty dollar gold coins came to a halt as European powers were engaged in The Great War and the United States debated whether or not it should enter the conflict. Although double eagles circulated to some extent in the Western states before the war, most of the twenty dollar coins were used as currency reserves, or for large overseas payments of government obligations or foreign trade. Large shipments of gold to foreign destinations were drastically curtailed during the war, and the existing supply of double eagles was adequate to meet domestic needs, making the mintage of twenty dollar coins unnecessary after 1916.The signing of the Armistice in 1918 and the Treaty of Versailles in 1919 signaled the end of the war, but a post-war recession limited foreign trade and reduced the need for large denomination gold coins. Economic recovery finally brought the resumption of double eagle coinage in 1920, with an ample mintage of 558,000 pieces accomplished at the San Francisco Mint. However, the 1920-S, like a number of branch mint double eagles struck during the 1920s, experienced minimal circulation. The only examples available to collectors were the remnants of the 543 pieces left from the Annual Assay Commission work and the 144 pieces paid out by the San Francisco Mint Cashier immediately after production ended. No hoards have ever appeared of this rare issue. A few circulated examples are known, suggesting a small number of coins served as a medium of exchange. Virtually the entire mintage was melted when Franklin Roosevelt signed the Gold Recall of 1933 into law, establishing the 1920-S as one of the preeminent issues of the Saint-Gaudens twenty dollar series. A Key Date's Pick, Bid to Win, Don't let it get Away, you might not find its equal Coin. I give this coin my highest recommendation
