Up for Auction is a wonderful piece of American History that wasn’t. A Pattern Coin. The 1866 Pattern Washington Five-Cent Piece. Judd-470, Pollock-562. Rarity-6-. Nickel. Plain Edge. Proof-63+. A bust of George Washington faces right on the obverse, the legend IN GOD WE TRUST above and the date below. A wreath of laurel on the reverse encloses a large broad numeral 5 with the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around. Struck in nickel with a plain edge. Also struck in bronze and equally as scarce as the nickel striking with about a dozen pieces known in each metal. The nickel-gray surfaces have taken on a slight golden peripheral color on each side. Nearly abrasion-free. A rare issue that appeals to Washingtoniana collectors and pattern specialists alike.
