Per PCGS Only 60 examples survive in uncirculated condition, and this figure includes the ones salvaged from the SS Brother Jonathan and the SS Republic. The 1864-s Per Doug Winter of PCGS �The 1864-s along with the 1862-s has the most poorly defined devices of all San Francisco Double Eagles. Typically, very little detail is seen on the curls and at the top of the head� This being said, please look at the pictures of the example at hand. Nice detail in both Areas!, WOW, great find. The example at hand has Bright and satiny luster with fewer abrasions that would normally be expected on a Type One Double Eagle of this grade. The strike is very well executed and a uniform golden-orange coloration is presented over both sides. Whether this lustrous Civil War era issue originated with the S.S. Brother Jonathan hoard, the source of the majority of known Uncirculated pieces, is open to speculation. Population is 3 in ms63 with 1 graded finer. Near Top Pop.
