The New Orleans Mint struck 51,000 eagles in 1853, almost all of which were distributed into circulation. Beginning in 1855, coinage of this denomination slipped even lower when California gold began to be processed at the newly operational San Francisco Mint, and gold deposits in New Orleans declined proportionately. Examples of this Gold Rush-era ten are available in most circulated grades, but Mint State pieces are extremely rare, and are unknown finer than MS61. This au58+ coin displays satiny yellow-gold luster and is surprisingly free of major abrasions; the surfaces instead show slight muting of the luster and scattered small ticks and a few lines -- nothing overly detracting or even noticeable to the unaided eye.
