David Bowers established, and John Dannreuther later corroborated, that both dates of this type, the 1838 and 1839/8, were struck from the same obverse die. So, with only one obverse die used, the difference between the two is the 1839 was simply overpunched with a 9. As the consignor pointed out, "By obtaining the 1839/8 issue, one is essentially obtaining two issues for the price of one, as they are from one and the same obverse die." This pleasing Choice XF example is lightly worn and moderately abraded for the grade.
