***Auction Highlight*** 1797 Rev '95 Gripped Edge Draped Bust Large Cent 1c Graded f, fine By USCG. 1797 1C Reverse of 1795, Gripped Edge f12. S-121b, Noyes Die State B/A, R.3. In his Large Cent Encyclopedia, Walter Breen enumerated five distinctly different edge types. Of those he discussed, only the Gripped edge is generally singled out, the others all grouped together as "Plain Edge." The Gripped Edge consists of irregularly spaced notches and raised dots or pellets on the edge. This variety has the reverse design with single leaves at the end of each branch of the wreath. This design was first used in 1795, and is still called the "Reverse of '95" by most collectors. The Guide Book lists this as "Gripped Edge, '96 Rev." Regardless of its name, this is a very rare coin. A Corey's Pick, Bid to Win Coin
