PROVENANCE: (Probably) Marchese Sigismondo della Stufa, Florence, by 1784.
Purchased by Sir Robert Gore-Booth, 4th Bt., M.P. (1805-1876), in Florence, 1837, and included in the list of 'pictures left for packing at Signor Gerardi's', datable to that year, [nos. 34-5]
'1 large Luca Giordano and frame' and '1 d[itt]o without frame'.

The Gore-Booth accounts clearly state that Sir Robert Gore-Booth bought the frames for both Giordano paintings (lot 283 and 284) and then made separate payments for their repair.

The prime version of this picture was formerly in the Kaiser Friedrich Museum, Berlin (O. Ferrari and G. Scavizzi, Luca Giordano, Naples, 1992, I, no. B2, II, fig. 422). An attribution to Giovanni Battista Simonelli has been proposed, on the basis of photographs, by Professor Riccardo Lattuada.
