PROVENANCE: (Probably) Marchese Sigismondo della Stufa, Florence, by 1784. Purchased by
Sir Robert Gore-Booth, 4th Bt., M.P. (1805-1876), in Florence, 1837, and included in the list of 'pictures left for packing at Signor Gerardi's', datable to that year, [nos. 34-5] '1 large Luca Giordano and frame' and '1 d[itt]o without frame'.
The Gore-Booth accounts clearly state that Sir Robert Gore-Booth bought the frames for both Giordano paintings (lot 283 and 284) and then made separate payments for their repair.

ENGRAVED: (Probably) G.B. Cecchi, 1784 (see below)
This picture is related to a canvas formerly with the Walpole Gallery (O. Ferrari and G. Scavizzi, Luca Giordano, Naples, 1992, I, no. A405, II, fig. 538). An attribution to Giovanni Battista Simonelli has been proposed, on the basis of photographs, by Professor Riccardo Lattuada.
In view of the Florentine provenance of the picture, it is very probable that the Pan and Syrinx is the variant of the Walpole Gallery composition recorded in Cecchi's engraving that is cited by Ferrari and Scavizzi (op. cit., p. 318).
