Note:
According to an original newspaper clipping from Mr. George Davidson to the reverse of the former with caption: "Two Romney Portraits, Discovery of Unrecorded Examples", this companion pair were unknown to Romney biographers. The portrait of Mrs. Edwards is first recorded in the artist's cash-book in December 1784 and in January 1785, Romney records the first installment for the portrait of Mr. Edwards. The portraits had remained in the possession of a descendant of Mrs. Taylor until they came into the market and sold by George Davidson Fine Art Dealer in the 19th Century.
