Manufacturer: Unknown Model: Matchlock
This attractive matchlock pistol exhibits a raised bead front sight on top of the cannon muzzle, with a series of three deeply chiseled figures; a woman in a flowing dress near the muzzle, a helmeted figure with spear and shield in the middle, and two men wrestling at the breech. A light border pattern is engraved on the lock, with a swiveling flash pan, cut-through designs on the trigger, and round accent plates. The stock is fitted with an ivory tipped ramrod, which slots into a pair of carved ivory pipes, and a very large number of material inserts. The tip is carved ivory, with ivory accents along the ramrod slot and ivory border lines. Mother of pearl geometric patterns are also present, with ebony used in conjunction with both the ivory and pearl for contrast. An ebony, ivory, and pearl floral design is present on the underside ahead of the trigger, with a number of crosses on the top and sides of the octagonal wrist. The butt is topped with an ebony accented fluted ivory cone, terminating in a small fluted acorn. Removal of the lock plate exposes a scribed number in the wood, "1821". Significance of this number is unknown. Origin unknown, quite possibly for Eastern Trade. Provenance: The William Ashby Collection
