Attractive Deluxe Gold Inlaid and Engraved Antique Model 1892 Winchester Rifle with Relief Carved Wood

Winchester Model 1892 rifle manufactured prior to 1898 and reportedly engraved by William C. Severson in the late 20th Century. Winchester Model 61 and Model 62 rifles with similar gold inlays and relief engraving are pictured on page 487 of "WINCHESTER ENGRAVING" by R.L. Wilson. The rifle has a 24 inch full octagon barrel, full length magazine and crescent steel buttplate. The barrel is fitted with a modified Lyman 31 W font sight and sporting style buckhorn rear sight. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A.-" in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The caliber designation "38 W.C.F." is roll-stamped on the top barrel flat just ahead of the receiver. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped "MODEL 1892/-WINCHESTER-/PAT. OCT. 4. 1884" in three lines. The serial number "73690" is roll-stamped across the underside of the receiver. The rifle is nickel plated and the straight grain black walnut stock and forearm have a high polished varnish piano finish. The receiver is fully covered with intricate floral relief engraving on a stippled background with gold inlaid borders. In addition to the scrollwork, the rifle has four highly detailed relief engraved game scenes with gold inlays and borders. The left side of the receiver features a gold inlaid grizzly attacking a bison, a panel on the right side of the receiver has a gold inlaid cougar in a forest scene, the bottom of the receiver has a relief carved mountain goat with gold inlaid horns in an oval with gold inlaid borders and the center of the buttplate is relief carved with a bighorn sheep with gold inlaid horns in an oval with gold borders. The serial number is surrounded by a gold inlaid rectangle. There are gold inlays on the sides of the lever and forearm cap along with gold inlaid bands on the barrel at the muzzle and near the receiver. The bottom of the receiver tang, top of the bolt and the sides of the lever and buttplate are engraved with fine crosshatching. The forearm and stock wrist are decorated with intricate relief-carved floral scrollwork. The engraving is the highest quality and reminiscent of the finest 19th Century Winchester factory engraving.

Very fine as professionally embellished. The intricately detailed engraving is crisp and deep. The stock and forearm retain all of the highly polished piano finish and the highly detailed relief carving is sharp and shows no handling wear. The stock and forearm are original to the rifle and have several very minor handling marks that pre-date the carving and engraving. The barrel legend is light but legible. The Model designation on the tang and the serial number on the receiver are crisp. This is an impressive example of contemporary craftsmanship with an unparalleled combination of highly detailed relief carved game scenes, intricate engraved scrollwork, extensive gold inlays and relief carved woodwork. This level of engraving would be very costly to duplicate.
