This Henry lever action rifle was manufactured by the New Haven Arms Company in September 1864. The rifle has an octagon barrel with integral magazine. The barrel has a nickel-silver front sight blade and blued folding leaf rear sight with 900 yard center notch. The left side of the stock is fitted with a special order sling swivel and the left side of the barrel has a screw-fastened sling loop. The stock has the late pattern buttplate with pointed heel. The walnut stock has a varnish finish. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "HENRY"S PATENT.OCT. 16.1860/MANUFACT'D BY THE NEWHAVEN ARMS.CO.NEWHAVEN. CT." ahead of the rear sight. The serial number, "6133" is located on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and the receiver. The serial number is also stamped on: (1) the inside of the buttplate, (2) inside of the upper tang recess on the stock wrist and (3) the left side of the lower receiver tang. All of the visible serial numbers match. The later style screws buttplate and tang screws are correctly not serial numbered. A "H" New Haven Arms inspection mark is stamped on the lower receiver tang behind the loading lever latch. The rifle is decorated with well-executed, period, scroll and floral pattern engraving on the sides and top of the receiver and on the heel of the buttplate. The top of the receiver is engraved with an illegible script name. The barrel, receiver and buttplate are fully nickel plated. The nickel plating, like the engraving, is period most likely but not factory work as it is too good and of a much higher quality. The stock has a polished varnish finish. Inscribed "G.C. SWALLOW" on top of receiver. No information about the aforementioned individual is avaliable to writer at time of description. Research should be done as it will most likely prove beneficial.
BBL: 24 inch octagon
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 44 RF
Finish: nickel
Grips:
Serial Number: 6133
Condition: Very good. The rifle retains nearly 90% of the period nickel plated finish. The barrel and receiver edges show light to moderate handling wear. The hammer and trigger retain most of the original casehardened finish. The side plate joints are tight and are generally free from dents and scratches. The receiver engraving shows handling wear that indicates that the rifle was nickel plated some time after it was engraved. The stock is in very good condition and has most of the varnish finish; wear is limited to several minor scratches and handling marks. This is an attractive example of an authentic inscribed, period-engraved, Henry rifle with nickel plated finish. An absolutely genuine and fresh Henry Rifle for the collecting fraternity to appreciate and hopefully own.
