Attractive 1858 Land Grant Signed by President Ja
Attractive 1858 Land Grant Signed by President James Buchanan While the signature at the bottom is secretarial, the large, bold signature in the text ("In Testimony Whereof, I, James Buchanan....") is Buchanan's own. Attractive American flag woodcut at the top, and original seal still affixed. Light age browning is mentioned for accuracy, but it is not unattractive. The document was originally folded into twelfths, but most of the creases are barely visible, and there is none of the typical deterioration of the paper at these points. All in all a fine example. Interestingly, it is made out to a veteran of the Tennessee Militia who had served in the "Florida War," the campaign to control Oceola and the Seminole Indians. Nicely matted with a 19th century engraving of Buchanan, 15.5" x 10". From the collection of Bradley O'Leary. Accompanied by COA from PSA/DNA.
