Chalk pastel on paper. Untitled New York City Subway Drawing. Circa 1980s. Chalk on black paper from a subway advertising board. Signed and attributed to Keith Haring (American, 1958-1990). 104 x 70.5 cm (41 x 27.8 inches). Haring drew these in New York City subway stations over five years between 1980 and 1985. The work is in very good condition, with some slight smudge marks. 104 x 70.5 cm (41 x 27.8 inches). Haring developed a distinct pop-graffiti aesthetic centered on fluid, bold outlines against a dense, rhythmic overspread of imagery like that of babies, barking dogs, flying saucers, hearts, and Mickey Mouse. In his subway drawings and murals, Haring explored themes of exploitation, subjugation, drug abuse, and rising fears of nuclear holocaust. PROVENANCE: Private collection (Ireland)
