Mixed media on paper, framed. Featuring a man dressed in a tuxedo. Signed and attributed to Alexandra Exter (Russian, 1884-1949) on the lower edge. 41.5 x 26.5 cm (16.3 x 10.4 inches). Frame size: 58 x 43 cm (22.8 x 16.9 inches). Alexandra Exter was a Russian painter of Polish birth, who is best known not only for her avant-garde oeuvre, but also for her advocacy of European modernist movements in Russia, such as Cubism and Futurism. Exter studied both in Kiev and Paris and, in the mid-1910s, she became strongly influenced by Kazimir Malevich’s Suprematist style, toward total abstraction. She described her work produced in this period of time as “color constructions.” Exter also worked simultaneously on theater and costume designs, which she approached as mobile, abstract sculptures. Later in life, she would adopt a more figurative style of painting. PROVENANCE: Southern Ontario estate
