Attorney General Roger B. Taney Autograph Letter Signed “R. B. Taney”. One page, 7.75” x 5.25”, Washington, October 29, 1832, in ink, with endorsements on the verso. “Dear Sir/ I send the bearer for my plate which you were good enough to place in the vaults of the Bank during the recent absence of my family from Washington.” Roger Brooke Taney (1777-1864) served as United States Attorney General, Secretary of the Treasury and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Taney was widely criticized for his decision in the infamous Dred Scott case, holding that restricting the spread of slavery into the territories was unconstitutional. The letter has some mended tears, is slightly soiled and has some uneven toning, else it is in very good condition with the usual fold creases. From the collection of Henry E.
