Athabascan Porcupine Quilled Caribou Belt c. 1890
Offered in this lot is a very rare and unusual caribou hide belt with porcupine quillwork from the Northern Athabascan Native American Indians and dating to circa 1890's. The belt shows an Indian tanned Caribou hide which is sinew sewn and shows an outstanding porcupine quilled geometric pattern down the center in the natural colors of brown and cream. Athabascan Quillwork is increasingly rare with this being a fine early example in well preserved condition. For another example see Allards Auction from March 2016 lot 283. The belt shows an old iron long early style buckle. The quill work has a very tight and expert weave which displays wonderfully. Trully a rare and exciting piece. Measures overall end to end 39"L and the belt is 1.5"W.
