Assistant Treasurer of the U.S., Fort Laramie, I.T., 1864 check to George Adams. Signed by John Fillmore, paymaster USO. Red check with patriotic vignette. I.T. stands for Idaho Territory which, when it was created in 1863, encompassed the present-day states of Idaho, Montana and most of Wyoming. Thus Fort Laramie at that time was in Idaho Territory rather than present-day Wyoming. Very few of these checks survived, and today they are quite scarce. Fort Laramie, established in 1834 as Fort William and later rebuilt in 1849 by the U.S. Army, became the most important military outpost on the northern Plains. It served as a key resupply and protection point for emigrants traveling the Oregon, California, and Mormon Trails, and it played a central role in U.S. relations with Plains tribes, including several major treaty councils. The fort remained active until its abandonment in 1890, after which it became a historic site.
