c1915 From Silver Bow County, Butte, MT. This tan canvas bag measures 14.5 x 5” and is stamped Richard McCarthy/ Assayer/ Butte, Montana. McCarthy was the manager of the firm Tout and McCarthy, Assayers and Chemists, who were active in the Butte District from at least the mid-teens to the 1930s, when McCarthy was noted in the Roundup Record Tribune (Roundup, MT, March 22, 1934) as the assayer of some ore samples from eastern Montana. The Mining and Scientific Press carried ads for the firm in 1916 and 1918. The Butte District was famed as the “Richest Hill on Earth” for its discoveries and subsequent mining of gold in 1864, silver in 1874, and of copper in the 1880s. Mining production has lasted for well over 100 years, with the heyday from 1882-1982. For the most part production was dominated by Anaconda MC. - HKA#65125
