Lot of Two Items: Assam Naga Powder Horn & Carved Horn Asian Container: (1) Nice large lacquered powder horn from the Lushai Hills area of Assam, Northern India. Used by the Naga, possibly the Tobokka tribe. Painted with black and red lacquer having a very nice woven cloth strap decorated with cowry shells. Spout cover is missing, measuring about 15'' long and 3'' wide at the base. Condition is good showing wear to the painted finish, scuffs and scrapes, and an old repair near the spout. The cloth strap shows age and soiling, but is very sound, and has all the cowry shells intact. (2) Carved water buffalo horn container, with lid in the shape of an animal. The body is decorated with carved designs in bordered panels; the lid has some kind of animal looking back over its shoulders. There are holes in the body and lid, and carved loops for a string that passes through the body and lid to keep it together when worn. Possibly used for medicine or other items, similar to a Japanese inro. Measures about 7-3/4'' tall and 2-1/4'' wide. Condition is very good showing only light use and age. Est.: $250-$400/lot.
