This offering is for an original Helen Hyde color woodblock print. Print is of a young Japanese boy. I do not know the name of this print. Print has original signature and markings (lower left date appears to be 1893, 1895 or 1898). There is a water stain in the upper righthand corner which may be cleaned. This print appears to be one of Hyde's earlier pieces. Additional information about the artist: Helen Hyde was born in Lima, New York in 1868, but grew up in the San Francisco area where she began to study art at an early age. She went to the California School of Design and traveled to Berlin and Paris for further studies. While in Paris she became interested in Japanese art and the work of Mary Cassatt. After the death of her mother, she left for Japan to study brush painting and color woodblock printing. Establishing a home in Tokyo, Hyde, became a prominent artist of the color woodblock print, depicting the Japanese landscape, their colorful clothing, and mothers and children. She also did a similar series of Mexico with skillful use of design and color. Eventually, becoming ill with cancer she returned to the United States, where she died in 1919. Helen Hyde is recognized as a leading exponent in introducing Japanese color woodblock printmaking techniques to the Western art world.
