Arts and Artistic Societies Montreal 2 Pairs English, French 1894-5 Discount Tickets plus two others. Total six pieces. Two pairs of coupons, each pair consisting of one with English, one with French Text. These are not lottery tickets, but apparently discount tickets for works of art and musical instruments. Also two other identical of a different type, 1895. Interesting and unusual. The Canadian Artistic Society was founded Dec. 24, 1894, with the goal of encouraging musical education and the establishment of a conservatory. This project was funded by the issuance of lottery tickets. The plan worked for a while, until, after five years, the federal government banned these lotteries. While it flourished, the conservatory was able to hire several acclaimed professors, paying a monthly salary of $25, and hundreds of students were accepted, all free of charge. Some of Quebec's most noted singers and musicians of the period got their start at this conservatory.
