Chrome Artillery Shell Used At John F. Kennedy Memorial Service. There is a military mandate which states that, "On the day after receipt of notification of the death of the President, ex-president, or president-elect of the United States, unless this day falls upon a Sunday or holiday in which case the honor will be rendered on the day after the Sunday or holiday, the commanding officers of all Army installations with the neccessary personnel and material will require the following: One gun to be fired every half hour, beginning at reveille and ending at retreat. " This practice brings us the lot at hand; a chrome artillery shell fired by the 1st Battalion of the 101st Artillery on the day following John F. Kennedy's death. A nation mourned as their leader's body was transported back to Washington for burial. This shot was the first round fired at reveille on the day after he was reported dead. The shell is polished and clean, and bears an inscription which details when, who, and why the shell was fired. It is in pristine condition. The shell comes from a Howitzer, a type of field artillery, which are also commonly used in 21 gun salutes at military funerals. This fantastic piece of history commemorates a moment many people can still remember vividly in their minds. "I was sitting in my desk at school when I heard...." or "I was at home watching television when..." are common statements uttered by people reflecting on where they were when they heard Kennedy had been shot. Do not miss the opportunity to hold this part of history; a piece of the memorial service which honored one of America's favorite presidents.
