<Our item number 136852><B>Sullivan, Arthur Sir.</B> &#40;1842-1900&#41; Popular English composer best known for his operatic collaborations with librettist W.S. Gilbert, including <I>H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance</I> and <I>The Mikado</I>. Sullivan&#39;s artistic output included 23 operas, 13 orchestral works, eight choral or oratorio works, two ballets, incidental music to several plays, and numerous hymns and other church pieces, songs, parlour ballads, part songs, carols, and piano and chamber pieces. In addition to his comic operas with Gilbert, Sullivan is known for some of his hymns, especially <I>Onward Christian Soldiers</I> and the well-known Christmas carol, <I>It Came Upon the Midnight Clear.</I><BR><BR>Original autograph musical manuscript signed twice, once at the top, &#34;Music by Arthur Sullivan,&#34; and at the end of the hymn, &#34;Arthur Sullivan. 16 June 1899,&#34; 1p, 12 x 9½ inches. Very good; some soiling and a few edge splits. The title, &#34;My [&#39;Her&#39; is mar ked through] times are in thine hands&#34; was taken from Psalm 31 verse 15, as noted on the top line by Sullivan. Other holograph notations are &#34;words by the Revd. S.J. Stone&#34; [there are no lyrics with the music], &#34;slowly, with devotion,&#34; &#34;After last verse,&#34; and &#34;A-men.&#34; <BR><BR>The manuscript remained in Sullivan&#39;s archive until his death in November 1900, at which time it was discovered and published. Queen Victoria died in January 1901 and the hymn was retitled &#34;Victoria&#34; to honor the Queen.
