American soldier and politician (1737-1818) who rose to the rank of major general in the Continental Army during the American Revolution but lost his command after a controversial retreat from Fort Ticonderoga. Manuscript DS, signed “Ar. St. Clair,” one page, 7.25 x 6, January 14, 1772. Document appointing several men from Bedford County to “view a Road beginning where the new Road thro Mount Pleasant Township ends and running the nearest and best way to the House of Jospeh Irwin Esqr., and thence to the long Bridge on the Fort Pitt Road.” Signed at the conclusion by St. Clair. In very good to fine condition, with tape reinforcements along folds on the reverse, and small chips at fold ends.
