In full, “I can now inform you that Mr. McCrea has left the Province near a Month ago, and is settled at Alexandria. I will therefore depend on your Promise that I shall succeed him. I know not whether this District will be of any Recount or not but be that as it will I am equally obliged to you and shall be glad of every opportunity to convince you how much I am sensible of it.” Scottish-born Arthur St. Clair had become the King's magistrate of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, when it was founded on February 26, 1773.
