Captain of the Carpathia (1869–1940) responsible for rescuing Titanic survivors on the morning of April 15, 1912. Exceedingly rare matte-finish 5 x 8 portrait of Captain Arthur Rostron by Hall’s Studio of Times Square, New York, boldly signed in the lower right in fountain pen, “A. H. Rostron.” In very good to fine condition, with light scattered creases and soiling, and a bit of silvering to dark areas of the image. Originally from the family of New York socialites Louis and Augusta Ogden, who were aboard the RMS Carpathia during the Titanic disaster and helped to photograph, document, and assist the survivors; the Ogdens and Captain Arthur H. Rostron remained in contact for the rest of their lives.

This remarkable photograph shows Arthur Henry Rostron circa 1912 as captain of the Carpathia and was featured in his article, ‘The Rescue of the Titanic Survivors,’ which appeared in the March 1913 issue of Scribner’s Magazine. Just the second signed photo of the captain we have offered, the other having been sold over a decade ago. Rostron’s autograph is scarce in any format, and this iconic uninscribed portrait is truly of the utmost desirability.
