Arthur Boyd and Sidney Nolan, two of Australia’s best known artists, were both
invited as honorary guests of the `Australia and Ireland 1788-1988’ conference,
held in Kilkenny in1983. The conference, organised by Con Howard and chaired by
Susan O’Reilly, sought to highlight the contribution made to Australian culture
by Irish emigrants and to ensure recognition of this contribution be part of
Australia’s bicentennial celebrations. Boyd’s debt to his Irish ancestory was
later acknowledged by his being named Irish-Australian of the year in 1988.
Concurrent with the conference, a group of Nolan’s paintings were exhibited in
Kilkenny (and later in Limerick and Dublin) and it is believed that these Boyd
prints were also included in the exhibition.
