ALS, one page, 5.25 x 7, personal letterhead, July 17, 1922. Letter to theologian A. J. Edmunds, in response to receiving an article. In full: “In my rushing life I never thanked you adequately for the papers you sent me. I am only digesting them now. The Return of Myers is particularly good. It is a wonderful piece of evidence.” Written under Doyle’s letter, and extending onto the back, Edmunds writes: “I left my studies in the Christian Religion at the Bellevue-Stratford for Sir Arthur Doyle when he was in Philadelphia in May 19.” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Doyle’s hand and also annotated by Edmunds. In fine condition, with intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, and light show-through from Edmunds’ writing on reverse.
The “evidence” mentioned here were likely related to Doyle’s interest in spiritualism and the occult. Following the death of his son during World War I, Sherlock Holmes’ creator became fascinated with the subject matter. While researching the topic of fairies, some photographs perpetrated a ruse “showing” fairies cavorting with two teenage girls. Doyle championed the photographs and inspired his book The Coming of Fairies, but ultimately tarnished his reputation in the process. Another interesting glimpse into Doyle’s less-than-logical side. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
